    An Empirical Analysis of the Effects of Plant Variety Protection Legislation on Innovation and Transferability

    Under the TRIPs Agreement, all member-countries of the World Trade Organization are required to provide an "effective" system of plant variety protection within a specific time frame. In many developing countries this has led to a divisive debate about the fundamental desirability of extending intellectual property rights to agriculture. But empirical studies on the economic impacts of PVP, especially its ability to generate large private sector investments in plant breeding and facilitate the transfer of technology, have been very limited.     An Assessment of the Potential Consumption Impacts of WHO Dietary Norms in OECD Countries

    The member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) have recently endorsed its Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. The strategy emphasizes the need to limit the consumption of saturated fats and trans fatty acids, salt and sugars, and to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables in order to combat the growing burden of non communicable diseases. Adherence to the norms recommended by the WHO would call for major changes in the consumption, production and trade of several key food products and several sectors of the food industry have expectedly raised serious concerns about the potential impact of these norms on their future growth prospects. This paper attempts a broad quantitative assessment of the consumption impacts of these norms in OECD countries using a mathematical programming approach. We find that adherence to the WHO norms would involve a significant decrease in the consumption of vegetable oils (30%), dairy products (28%), sugar (24%), animal fats (30%) and meat (pig meat, 13.5%, mutton and goat 14.5%) and a significant increase in the human consumption of cereals (31%), fruits (25%) and vegetables (21%).     Challenges for Intelligent Data Analysis Methods in Medical Image Analysis during Surgical Interventions of Aneurysms

    Aortic aneurysms (AA) can be the primary cause of over 10,000 deaths and indirect cause for another 18,000 deaths annually in the USA as per the recent data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among the several factors related to high mortality, imaging methods and intervention procedures could be important. The commonly used diagnostic imaging methods of aneurysms are computed tomography (CT), magnet resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and amalgamation of fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) integrated with positron emission tomography (PET) and/or CT and PET with CT or MRI. Several research findings indicate that diagnostic efficiency of different imaging methods differ. As intervention procedures depend upon diagnosis, the choice of appropriate diagnostic imaging method for a given case is very important. If the critical characteristics of the swelling are not detected due to the choice of unsuitable imaging method, interventions may not be very suitable. The American College of Radiologists (ACR) prescribed some appropriateness guidelines for diagnostic imaging. Not complying with them fully or partially may also be a mortality factor.     Canine Parvovirus Isolates of India and the Relevance of Canine Parvovirus Type-2 Vaccines

    A study was conducted to characterise the field isolates of canine parvovirus (CPV) and an in vitro cross neutralisation assay was performed against the vaccinated dog sera. Out of 45 faecal samples processed for virus isolation, 27 samples showed cytopathic effect (CPE) at first passage, which were confirmed positive by CPV variant types specific PCR. The CPV type 2 was not detected in any of the clinical samples. Of these 27 positive samples only 23 samples showed CPE and were further confirmed as CPV by haemagglutination inhibition test, ELISA and immuno-chromatographic strip test. Antigenic typing performed using a panel of monoclonal antibodies revealed that four of the 23 isolates were CPV 2b type and the remaining 19 isolates were typed as CPV 2a. The antigenic typing results obtained using the monoclonal antibodies corroborated the sequencing results reported by our group earlier. The cross neutralization study with polyclonal sera revealed that the sera of original antigenic type CPV 2 can neutralize the antigenic variants 2a and 2b effectively. Thus we conclude that the vaccines containing CPV type 2 virus can be used to immunise the dogs against the prevalent CPV 2a and CPV 2b infection. A live virus challenge study in dogs may further confirm this observation

    Modeling Thermoregulatory Responses to Cold Environments

    The ability to model and simulate the rise and fall of core body temperature is of significant interest to a broad spectrum of organizations. These organizations include the military, as well as both public and private health and medical groups. To effectively use cold models, it is useful to understand the first principles of heat transfer within a given environment as well as have an understanding of the underlying physiology, including the thermoregulatory responses to various conditions and activities. The combination of both rational or first principles and empirical approaches to modeling allow for the development of practical models that can predict and simulate core body temperature changes for a given individual and ultimately provide protection from injury or death. The ability to predict these maximal potentials within complex and extreme environments is difficult. The present work outlines biomedical modeling techniques to simulate and predict cold-related injuries, and discusses current and legacy models and methods

    A Novel Role for Connexin Hemichannel in Oxidative Stress and Smoking-Induced Cell Injury

    Oxidative stress is linked to many pathological conditions, including ischemia, atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders. The molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress induced pathophysiology and cell death are currently poorly understood. Our present work demonstrates that oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species and cigarette smoke extract depolarize the cell membrane and open connexin hemichannels. Under oxidative stress, connexin expression and connexin silencing resulted in increased and reduced cell deaths, respectively. Morphological and live/dead assays indicate that cell death is likely through apoptosis. Our studies provide new insights into the mechanistic role of hemichannels in oxidative stress induced cell injury

    On the use of shape constraints for state estimation in reaction systems

    State estimation techniques are used for improving the quality of measured signals and for reconstructing unmeasured quantities. In chemical reaction systems, nonlinear estimators are often used to improve the quality of estimated concentrations. These nonlinear estimators, which include the extended Kalman filter, the receding-horizon nonlinear Kalman filter and the moving-horizon estimator, use a state-space representation in terms of concentrations. An alternative to the representation of chemical reaction systems in terms of concentrations consists in representing these systems in terms of extents. This paper formulates the state estimation problem in terms of extents, which allows imposing additional shape constraints on the sign, monotonicity and concavity/convexity properties of extents. The addition of shape constraints often leads to significantly improved state estimates. A simulated example illustrates the formulation of the state estimation problem in terms of concentrations and extents, and the use of shape constraints
